Trend: Watercolor prints

Here’s Coco Rocha in H&M’s spring ad campaign, showing off another trend for this season – watercolor prints.  I like this look because it gives off a very ladylike vibe without being too OTT prim and proper.

In retrospect, yesterday’s Moschino Cheap and Chic dress probably falls into this category as well, though it’s a different interpretation than this one.  But whether you chose floral or a more abstract print, there are a slew of ways to wear this trend and you’ll find them everywhere from Matthew Williamson tops to Old Navy scarves.

Trend: One shoulder

I briefly discussed the slew of one-shoulder dresses on the red carpets this past awards show season in this Michelle Obama style post, but now the trend has worked its way over to tops as well.  Here’s a great example by Robert Rodriguez:

I love the ruffle detail on this silk/spandex top ($275).  This would be great for a night out or even just for a girls bruch, depending on what you wear it with.  Here’s my accessory advice:  Keep the earrings very simple (or just go without) since there’s already a lot of detail around the neckline.  And don’t even think about a necklace.  Let your focal piece be a stand-out bracelet, or even an over-the-top cocktail ring.

The other must-have for this trend is a convertible bra.  I have a great one from Victoria’s Secret.  You can wear it strapless, halter, one-shoulder, criss cross or a number of other ways.  It’s a girl’s best friend for summer tops.

Trend: Nautical

Continuing on with the spring 2009 trend reports…  Another key look for this season will be nautical.  If you’re searching for a big way to buy into the trend, look no further than this gorgeous dress by Chloe ($2,185).

It’s a beautiful piece with staying power since it doesn’t scream “In the Navy!”  The stripes bring the trend home but the uneven lines and slightly distressed fabric will keep it relevant for years to come.

If you want a more literal interpretation, go for this nautical striped sweater by Burberry ($225).

I would pair this with a dark trouser jean for a crisp, clean look or with a dark skinny or straight leg jean for a more relaxed feel. (Stay away from a bootcut or you’ll wind up looking mumsy.)

Trend: Gladiator Sandals (yes, still)

Well, it looks like gladiator sandals are here to stay for at least one more summer. So be glad if you purchased an investment pair last year, like Yves St. Laurent or Giuseppe Zanotti, both of whom did stunning versions. And if you didn’t, don’t fret! There are plenty of new styles to choose from.

Consider these two-toned half-metallic beauties from Miu Miu ($445).  They also come in a gold and tan combination in a version that wraps slightly higher up the ankle ($585).  Both available from Net-A-Porter.com.

Or if you prefer a touch of prep in your step, go for the Fendi B Buckle sandal in patent leather with tortoiseshell detail ($605).  Available from Net-A-Porter.com.

If you’re feeling bold, try these from See by Chloe ($295).  They’ll crossover very nicely into the 2009 nautical trend as well.

If those are a little too rich for your wallet, check out this version by Nine West ($79).  The Ruffian is available in either natural or black leather and will certainly hold its own against its designer counterparts.

And just so you all know, it’s killing me to write about sandals when we’re potentially facing single digit temps at the end of this week.  But such is the fashion machine…  Bryant Park is showing sailor shorts and halter tops while the Fashion Week attendees are breathing icicles and stamping their Choos to keep warm.

Trend: Geometric Prints

Yes, I know we’ve only just gotten through the holidays, but spring will be here before we know it.  Perhaps sooner down here in the south than elsewhere…

One big trend for spring is geometrics.  The Diane Von Furstenberg Carlotta dress ($325) will take you right back to sophomore year math class – but in a good way.  I love the colors and the vertical stripe pattern is always slimming.

I would even pair this with tights until the weather warms up to get some extra mileage out of it.
