Ask The Fashionista: Watches

Much to my delight, another reader has deemed me savvy enough to ask my advice.  This time, the item in question is watches.  I actually don’t wear a watch so this is often an accessory that falls off my radar.  But I was more than happy to delve into the topic of timepieces.

An excerpt from Susan’s comment:

It seems that chunky watches (particularly in white) are all the rage these days. I like that look, but need something that would also be appropriate to wear to work. Can you do a post on watches? I’d love something on the affordable side (under $200 maybe).

Here’s what I’ve found…

This Michael Kors watch ($150) is a perfect mix of trendy and professional.  Personally, I’m a big fan of the gold-tone stainless steel face and hardware on the white leather but this style also comes in silver/black ($130) and gold/brown ($195) combinations.

And though it’s slightly over the requested budget, at $225, here’s a similar style by Marc by Marc Jacobs in silver on white.  The overall feel is a bit funkier but still well within the office appropriate range.  Not to mention, this one is available in a boatload of metal/leather combos.

Overall, I found Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs to have by far the widest range of stylish watches at this pricepoint.  Whether you’re looking for gold or silver, leather band or steel band, funky or conservative (or somewhere in between), square face or round face… I bet you can find exactly what you need.

A quick tip:  Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Dillards and Bloomingdale’s had the best online selections.

Hope this helps, Susan!  Maybe it can at least get you started in the right direction.

Spare the bank, spoil the eyes

To kick off the week, I thought I’d show a couple of gorgeous sunglass options – both styles for under $100.

These super-chic Marc by Marc Jacobs shades ($98) are a great way to add a splash of style to your summer.  Choose chocolate frames with goldtone arms or go for the black and silver combination.

Or if you’re looking to add a little pop of color, try these MICHAEL Michael Kors aviators ($95).  These are cute and playful – perfect for summer!

Ask The Fashionista: Champagne brunch

Another content request…  My friend Catherine wants to know what she should to wear to a champagne brunch.  I’ve come up with a couple of options for her.  And since I know she’s budget conscious, nothing here is over $130.00.

I love this MICHAEL Michael Kors dress ($129.50) because it’s light and swingy and therefore, comfortable.  The color is beautiful and eye-catching and the length is perfect for showing off good gams (which I happen to know Catherine has).

These patent wedges ($120) are a perfect compliment to the dress above.  The patent shine dresses them up but the wooden heel brings them back down a notch, making them great for daytime.

The other option is a top and trousers combo.  This cowl neck top ($39) in a coral print is gorgeous.  I would pair it with white trousers for a really fresh spring/summer look.

My footwear choice for the second outfit is a flat sandal.  I like this patent t-strap version ($49) because once again, the patent looks very polished but the stones add a slightly casual daytime-appropriate look.

Get the blues

With March right around the corner, it’s nearly time for outerwear to lighten up.  Time for wool to give way to cotton twill.  Time for grey to give way to bright blue.

I love the idea of taking a classic and timeless piece like the trench and giving it an unexpected  punch of color.

This double-breasted and belted version by MICHAEL Michael Kors ($96 on Bluefly.com) is bound to brighten up your spring.  And at under $100, I can’t see any good reason not to invest.

Dress Week – Michael Kors

Moving on to day two of dress week with a Michael Kors red jersey dress.  There are so many good things about this short sleeved piece ($995) it’s hard to know where to start!

First of all, it’s jersey, which means it’s nearly impossible to wrinkle and will easily go from day to evening with a quick change of accessory.  The color is gorgeous and vibrant.  The knot detail in front adds just enough interest to the otherwise simple style.  The V-neck is deep enough for date night but can easily be rendered office-worthy with a slim tank underneath.

Need I go on?  Or do you get the point?

Mr. Kors, I do believe you’ve done it again.

Stylish Stars: Blake Lively

Blake Lively attended Michael Kors’ Spring 09 fashion show wearing one of the designers freshest and most beautiful looks from the collection.  Even though this was back in September of last year (practically decades in the fashion world), I only saw it in my February issue of In Style.  Blake looks absolutely stunning here and I love that she’s following the “show the legs, put away the cleavage” (or vice versa) rule.

In my opinion, no American designer does women’s ready-to-wear as well as Michael Kors.  This dress embodies that aesthetic perfectly.  The classic sheath silhouette gets a bit of a shake-up with the non-traditional take on pattern.

From what I hear, this dress won’t be available to purchase until April so start saving your benjies now!

After looking at this dress a little longer, it occurred to me that it was slightly similar to one in my very own closet.  This is my 2007 Royal Ascot dress from Coast in London.  I’ve always wanted to be a designer’s muse.  Michael Kors?  Any chance you’re accepting applications for a muse-in-training?
