Live for Saturday

If anybody knows how to put on a sale, it’s J. Crew.  And I just happen to know that lots of new styles have just been added to their sale section online.  (You, too, can be “in the know” by signing up for their email alerts.)  So get on over there and get to shopping!

But before you go, allow me to direct your attention to a great summer trouser:  the Saturday Pant ($19.99 – $39.99 depending on color).

Available in a range of neutral colors, this is a great trouser to dress up or down.  I have the pewter color shown here and I’ve worn them with a black embellished tank and sandals for evening and with slub cotton tees and flip flops during the day.

This is Saturday style at its best!

Light as a feather

I discovered the J.Crew featherweight cardigan ($59.50) last year during one of my shopping rampages that became a staple of my visits back to the US from London.  (When you’re looking at a 2.1 exchange rate, it feels like they’re just giving stuff away over here so Jason and I often came over with near-empty suitcases and took them back bulging full of new clothes.)  As soon as I started wearing mine, I wished I’d bought it in a few more colors besides navy.

It’s made of cotton in a 16-gauge knit.  For those of you who don’t speak textile-ese, that means cool, comfy, and light as paper.

I’ve worn mine about a billion times since I bought it and I plan on snatching up some additional colors this time around.

The perfect summer LBD

It’s not often you come across a dress that ticks all the boxes. Flattering fit? Check. Versatile? I think you could wear this for day or evening, so… check. Price? At $98, I’d say that’s a check.  The embossed cotton Lorelai dress from J.Crew fits the bill for pretty much any summer occasion.

Wear it with embellished flip flops for a lazy Saturday picnic.  Dress it up with some standout jewelry for Sunday brunch.  Keep the jewelry on and trade the flip flops for a heel for date night.  This is an all-around great dress and every girl needs this or something like it in her closet.

While I know this is technically an LBD post, I thought it was worth mentioning that this dress actually comes in a rainbow of colors.  Check it out at JCrew.com.

Is Michelle Obama our generation’s Jackie Kennedy?  I think she’s certainly closer to that distinction than any other First Lady has come.  Let’s take a look at some of her moments in the spotlight…

For Inauguration Day, she chose New York-based deigner Isabel Toledo.  This lemongrass ensemble stood out in a sea of red and blue.  Her green J.Crew gloves and coordinating Jimmy Choos complete the look without being too “matchy-matchy”.

Michelle Obama - Inauguration day

Criticized by some for not being bold enough in her color choice, I think she looks absolutely radiant in this white gown by Jason Wu.  As anyone who watched the Golden Globes red carpet knows, one shoulder gowns are the silhouette of the season.

This dress from the Democratic National Convention is unmistakably Thakoon.  It’s a great use of color and pattern, modest and flattering all at the same time.

Michelle Obama - DNC

Here she is in standout purple, supporting Chicago designer Maria Pinto.  This dress is classic Kennedy to me, but the belt brings it current.  (I believe this was the night of the “infamous” fist-bump.  Can anyone explain the media storm that created???)

Michelle Obama - on the campaign trail

Her election night choice, this Narciso Rodriguez dress is considered by many to be her only major sartorial misstep.  While it’s perhaps not my favorite, I don’t quite get the uproar it caused in the fashion community.  The criss-cross cummerbund isn’t the most flattering but I think, as a whole, this dress showed she’s not afraid to take a chance.

I just spotted this most recent look by designer Tracy Feith, as worn to a service at the Washington National Cathedral yesterday morning.  This gorgeous frock is yet another nod to Jackie with its distinctly 50’s/60’s silhouette, elegant boat neckline and elbow-length sleeves.  Perfect.

It’s That Time of Year

Now is the perfect time to catch an amazing deal on a winter coat.  And the best part is that…it’s still winter!  So you’ll be able to put it to use right away.  The absolute best selection and best deals I’ve found are at J.Crew.

They have more than 20 different styles of winter coats on clearance right now.  Most were originally priced in the $325 – $350 range and are now starting as low as $79.99, with lots at the $99.00 price point.  (Plus, enter the code EXTRA20 at checkout for an additional 20% off your purchase.)

I saw single-breasted, double-breasted, belted, peacoats, day coats, wool, cashmere, tweed, wool-pique, double-cloth – you name it.  And lots of them come in a range of colors: black, charcoal, camel, red, blue, purple, yellow, chocolate…  So whether you’re looking to update your staple coat or diversify your winter wardrobe with some color, there’s plenty to choose from.

Here’s my pick:

Simple, classic and easily dressed up or down, the Stadium-Cloth Shipley coat ($99.99) is available in black, navy (shown), ivory and dark poppy.

Bluefly is also well-stocked on outerwear.  Starting at around $100, chose from Mackage, A.B.S, DKNY, Michael Kors (KORS and MICHAEL labels) and several others.
