Movie madness and fashion week sadness

Today is the day.  Confessions of a Shopaholic opens in theaters everywhere.  I, for one will be there.  Mainly because I’m a sucker for a chick flick with outrageous clothes.  It also doesn’t hurt that Isla Fisher is playing Ms. Shopaholic herself – Becky Bloomwood.  I think Isla Fisher is the bees knees.

Not to mention my very good friend Beth is flying into Raleigh today for a visit and we sho’ do love to go to the movies together.  I even flew all the way over from London to New York to go to the opening of the Sex and the City movie with her.  It’s kind of our thing.  (I’ve already emailed her to say that as soon as a release date is announced for the SATC sequel, I’m booking my flight.)

I have to be honest though, I’m just a titch concerned about just how out of control Becky’s outfits will be.  We’ve all seen the trailers on tv and photo stills from the set and I think Patricia Field just may have….well, overdone it.  Just a tad.  (Okay, a lot.)  Carrie Bradshaw’s most ridiculous getups have nothing on this.  As Tim Gunn might say “This is a lot of look.  I’m worried.”

In other news…

Today New York Fashion Week kicks off proper.  It should be an interesting season since so many designers have already set expectations that shows won’t be as lavish as they were in years past.  Not to mention a slew have opted out altogether, instead holding private viewings for buyers and editors in their showrooms.  (Thanks a lot, economy.)  Nonetheless, I can’t wait to see what comes down the runway!

Oh, to be invited…

It’s not just that it would be my dream to be invited to a New York Fashion Week show, it’s also that the invites themselves are on my wish list.  Case in point: these screen printed vintage scarves, as sent out by Lewis and Ashley Jeanne.  The designers scoured eBay and vintage stores everywhere to find them all.

What I wouldn’t give for one of these to land in my mailbox!  I’d also love to get my hands on (or hand in, more appropriately) one of Betsey Johnson’s oven mitt invites.  Nothing short of brilliant!

It’s nice to see that in these tough times, when even stalwarts on the NYFW scene are dramatically scaling back, designers are still putting in overtime on the creativity front.  Because really, after all that pesky buying and editing business, isn’t that what Fashion Week is for?
