My heart belongs to Marc

Here’s the deal.  It’s no secret that I’m in love with Marc Jacobs and I want him to be my gay husband.  Or at the very least, I want him to adopt me so he and his Brazilian fiance can be My Two Dads.  But do you really know why I harbor so much affection for The Jacobs?

Is it because he rocks skorts and kilts like I wear jeans every day?  Yes.  But it’s mostly because of stuff like this:

These babies are a mere $12 each!  A chunky ring is a great way to add a punch to any outfit – from jeans, a tank and flip-flops to a cocktail dress and heels.

Marc always has lots of inexpensive little trinkets, tees and canvas bags in his shops and it’s such good fun to sift through them.  I spent more than a few afternoons at the Marc Jacobs store on Mount Street in London’s Mayfair neighborhood doing just that.  It might be the only place in the world where you can buy a $2,000 bag and a $10 bracelet on the same receipt.  I think it’s brilliant that pretty much any girl on the street can walk in and come out with a Marc Jacobs shopping bag on her elbow.  I, personally, can’t think of a better way to brighten up your lunch hour.

Ask The Fashionista: Watches

Much to my delight, another reader has deemed me savvy enough to ask my advice.  This time, the item in question is watches.  I actually don’t wear a watch so this is often an accessory that falls off my radar.  But I was more than happy to delve into the topic of timepieces.

An excerpt from Susan’s comment:

It seems that chunky watches (particularly in white) are all the rage these days. I like that look, but need something that would also be appropriate to wear to work. Can you do a post on watches? I’d love something on the affordable side (under $200 maybe).

Here’s what I’ve found…

This Michael Kors watch ($150) is a perfect mix of trendy and professional.  Personally, I’m a big fan of the gold-tone stainless steel face and hardware on the white leather but this style also comes in silver/black ($130) and gold/brown ($195) combinations.

And though it’s slightly over the requested budget, at $225, here’s a similar style by Marc by Marc Jacobs in silver on white.  The overall feel is a bit funkier but still well within the office appropriate range.  Not to mention, this one is available in a boatload of metal/leather combos.

Overall, I found Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs to have by far the widest range of stylish watches at this pricepoint.  Whether you’re looking for gold or silver, leather band or steel band, funky or conservative (or somewhere in between), square face or round face… I bet you can find exactly what you need.

A quick tip:  Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Dillards and Bloomingdale’s had the best online selections.

Hope this helps, Susan!  Maybe it can at least get you started in the right direction.

These super-chic Marc by Marc Jacobs shades ($98) are a great way to add a splash of style to your summer.  Choose chocolate frames with goldtone arms or go for the black and silver combination.

What I’m wearing – Lazy Sunday afternoon

So, I probably won’t do this often but I sometimes get questions from friends along the lines of “What do you wear when you —– ?” or “How would you dress for —- ?”.  So, on Sunday, the husband and I were hanging out on the front porch at Brooklyn Heights on Glenwood South and I got to playing around with the iPhone camera.  I took a couple of photos of what I was wearing, figuring I could angle a post out of it…

Here you have it – my ideal outfit for a lazy Sunday afternoon of drinking bloody marys and reading.

Bag – Kooba; Sandals – LK Bennett (London); Pedicure – OPI Strawberry Margarita; Maxi dress – Target

Here comes the sun

I have had the same pair of black Prada sunglasses for about three years now and boy have they served me well. Too well. They seem to be nearly indestructible. They have been dropped directly onto the cobblestone pavement of roughly 87 European cities (and Tokyo). I’ve sat on them. I’ve stepped on them. I’ve accidentally popped the lenses out more times than I can count. I’ve shoved them mercilessly into various handbags, backpacks, suitcases, glove compartments, airport security bins and shopping bags. Yet they remain unscathed and unscratched. How? Personally, I’m beginning to wonder if Prada’s eye wear license holder doesn’t construct the frames and lenses out of some crazy space-age material purchased in bulk from NASA.

But I’ll show you what’s on my shopping list the minute my faithful Pradas go on to that great duty free shop in the sky…

I have always wanted a pair of aviator-inspired shades and I think these by Louis Vuitton ($450) are just about perfect. Is it too early to start a Christmas list?

These are so gorgeous I couldn’t resist sharing them.  Your Slip Is Showing offers undergarments so lovely you’ll want to show them off.  And with luxe trims like pleated organza, chiffon rosettes, beaded silk and ostrich feathers, that’s exactly what they’re made for.  Pump new life into your closet by letting one peek out from under a dress or skirt you’ve had for a few years.

My Favorite Things: Cuffs

Cuffs are one of my absolute favorites types of jewelry for a couple of reasons.  First, because I have freakishly skinny wrists, bangles are almost always too big for me and slide right off whereas cuffs are usually adjustable.  Second, they make for easy accessorizing because they’re typically so bold that there’s no need to think about what other piece of jewelry it “goes” with.  Just throw on the cuff and leave the rest in the jewelry box.

My first few examples are all from Net-A-Porter.com and would make a fairly sizeable dent in your piggy bank.  Coming in at a hefty $1,065, $280 and $265 respectively, none are very attainable to the average girl.  But they sure are pretty to look at, no?

Don’t get me wrong.  If you have the means, I highly recommend these.  But if you don’t, I assure you that gorgeous cuffs are available at all price points.  I, myself, have a few from a great little shop in the UK called Accessorize.  Oh how I wish Accessorize would make the great leap over the pond.  But while I fantasize about that, here are a couple that are available right here in the good ol’ USA.

I absolutely fell in love with this recycled metal version from Target.  The leaf motif, the gold color, the width…  I love everything about it.  And at only $39.99, my wallet (and my long-suffering husband) loves it too!

This mixed metal woven cuff from Banana Rebublic is great because it incorporates both silver and gold tones.  The woven look works for day or evening because I think it’s either edgy or preppy, depending on how you look at it and what you wear it with.  And again, at $44.00, there’s no reason not to treat yourself!

And while I’m at it, I thought I’d show a couple from my very own jewelry drawer.

Here’s one from the aforementioned Accessorize that I picked up last summer for a whopping ₤6.00, which, at the time, amounted to about $12.00.

Gold Floral cuff

And my favorite, my piece de resistance, is this vintage 1960’s rose gold number.  I picked it up at a vintage shop in Chelsea.  I came across a table strewn with all manner of 50’s and 60’s costume jewelry and this stood out instantly.  It was love at first sight.  And let me tell you, just about every single time I wear it, I get compliments on it.

P.S.  If you get inspired and decide to google “cuffs” at work, you should know that I encountered a few interesting search results during my research for this post.  Use your imagination…
